도쿄 시내에 위치한 Trane은 부부와 아이들이 단란하게 살고 있는 협소주택으로 금융권에서 일하는 남편과 하이앤드 가구 산업 분야에서 일하는 아내의 의견이 더해진 주거공간이다. 특히, 남편은 과거 재즈 뮤지션으로 활동했는데, 그의 롤모델이었던 John Coltrane(존 콜트레인)의 음악 세계관을 주거 공간에 반영하길 원했다.

John Coltrane은 수많은 명연을 보여준, 재즈의 역사에 길이 남은 뮤지션으로 재즈 팬들에게 큰 감동을 주며 후배들에게 좋은 귀감이 되고 있다. 이러한 그의 음악적 세계관을 담은 Trane은 Galvalume(갈바륨)으로 마감된 돌출 외관과 평화로우면서도 무드 있는 실내의 조화로움이 인상적이다.

넓지 않은 공간을 효율적으로 사용하기 위해 필로티 구조를 취하고 있으며, 이로 인해 주차 문제를 해결했다. 주차 공간으로 인해 비교적 활용 면적이 적은 1층에는 실내와 야외를 잇는 긴 복도와 부부의 침실, 욕실이 마련되어 있다. 침실은 1층 뒤쪽에 위치하고 있으며, 욕실은 안뜰과 인접해 있어 욕조에 누우면 따스한 채광을 느낄 수 있다.

2층은 스토리지의 기능을 겸하는 계단을 통해 이어진다. 2층에는 거실과 주방, 발코니와 같이 가족이 공유할 수있는 공용 생활 공간이 자리해있는데, 재즈 바의 세련된 분위기를 띠고 있어 식사와 음료를 즐기기에 이상적인 장소로 완성되었다. 거실은 천고가 높고, 차분한 무채색 컬러를 사용해 깊은 무드가 느껴지며, 사선으로 난 벽면의 채광창을 통해 자연광을 내부로 유입한다.

Trane의 가장 독특한 인테리어 요소는 Catwalk Bridge로 공간에 인더스트리얼 풍의 분위기를 더한다. 아이들 방과 별도의 개인 공간은 3층에 마련되어 있으며 루프탑과 연결되어 있다. 옥상은 파티를 열기에 최적의 장소이자 자연과 소통하기에 완벽한 곳으로 기능한다.

This small house in downtown Tokyo is owned by a husband who works in finance and his wife who works in the high-end furniture industry. The husband had previously been a jazz musician, and the starting point for the design was his request that the living space reflect the world-view of his role model John Coltrane’s music. The building is elevated by pilotis, with the entryway located next to a parking area sheltered by the overhanging volume. The master bedroom is at the back of the ground floor, with a bathroom in front filled with peaceful light that pours in from an adjacent courtyard. A staircase leads to the second floor, where a jazz-bar-like dining and kitchen area offers an ideal spot for sharing a meal or drinks with family and close friends.

The living room is defined by its slanted double-height ceiling and skylights that bring in plenty of natural light, while a catwalk bridge lends an industrial ambiance. The residents enjoy listening to jazz in this space, where a photograph of John Coltrane hangs on one wall. On a small balcony facing the road, steel louvers block visibility from below to ensure privacy. The children’s room and other private spaces are located in an open arrangement on the third floor, which also provides access to a rooftop bar where the residents enjoy garden parties with their frequent guests. By avoiding partitions in the compact structure, the design succeeds in creating a single open room linked vertically from floor to floor. The result is a theatre-like small home whose residents live their own story.
